Overview

Hip is one of the most stable joints of the human body. It has a vital role in making body movements. As one of the top weight bearing parts of the human body, hip pain and discomforts are very common among people.

What is the hip?

The region on each side of the pelvis is defined as the hip. The pelvic bone consists of 3 sections:

  • The wide and flaring portion of the pelvis called Ilium
  • The lower and outer part of the pelvis called Pubis
  • Ischium

The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint. The socket area inside the pelvis is called the acetabulum. The ball part of the joint joins the acetabulum and the hip joint. Excessive pressure can make it susceptible to arthritis. Hip pain is one of the most common problems heard in many people. Damage to the joint, muscles or tendons can cause hip joint pain.

What are the common conditions that affect the hip?

There are various conditions which may affect the structure and functioning of the hip. Some of the common hip conditions include:

Arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Soft tissue conditions

Bursitis

  • Trochanteric bursa
  • Ischial bursa

Iliopasoas tendinitis

  • Snapping iliopsoases tendon
  • Torn acetabular labrum
