Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy refers to a surgical procedure that is used to visualize, diagnose and treat problems or disorders that affect the inside of a joint. Soft tissue injuries i.e. injuries or diseases that severely affect the muscles, tendons, fibrous tissues, fat, blood vessels, nerves, and synovial tissues often cause a lot of pain and discomfort to the patient and are difficult to treat. However, these injuries can be effectively managed using Arthroscopy. Arthroscopic surgery requires the use of a general, spinal or a local anesthetic and could be performed in either a hospital operating room or an outpatient surgical suite. Due to the rapid advancement in surgical techniques, most of the conditions can be treated arthroscopically.

In this procedure, an orthopedic surgeon creates a minor incision in the patient’s skin and then inserts an arthroscope equipped with a small lens and lighting system to magnify and clearly view the structures within the joint. Several other incisions are also made to view other parts of the joint or to insert other specially-designed equipments. By connecting the arthroscope to a small television camera, the surgeon can accurately view the interior of the joint.

The television camera connected to the arthroscope displays the clear and precise image of the joint on a screen. This in turn helps the surgeon to determine the type of injury, and to rectify the problem, if it is required.
