What is lordosis?

Lordosis is a condition that affect the spine. It is also known as swayback. The condition is characterised by an excessive curvature of the spine in the lower back. It is natural to have a curvature in the neck, lower and upper back. But, when the natural curve in the lower back becomes too curvy, it is considered as lordosis. Lordosis can lead to excess pain on the spine and results in pain. The arch will be very much visible on the lower backs of affected people. It may appear in “C” shape when looking from the side.

What causes the lordosis?

Usually, lordosis in childhood may be of an unknown cause. It is called benign juvenile lordosis. Lordosis may affect people at any age. Some of the common causes of lordosis include:

  • Obesity

  • Poor posture

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Kyphosis

  • Osteoporosis

  • Achondroplasia

  • Discitis

What are the symptoms of lordosis?

Common signs and symptoms of lordosis are:

  • Curvature of the spine

  • Muscle spasms

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Pain

  • Bowel or bladder difficulties

How is the condition diagnosed?

The condition can be diagnosed by the physical examination itself. However, if the curve seems not bendable/fixed, the doctor may suggest other tests such as:

  • X-ray of the spine

  • X-ray of the lumbosacral spine

  • Tests to rule out other issues that might be a cause for the condition

  • Laboratory tests

  • MRI of the spine

The treatment options may vary depending on the symptoms and severity of the curvature. Some of the commonly suggested treatment options may include:
