Acupuncture for Infertility

Acupuncture is a treatment method which uses ultra-thin and sterile needle to insert in certain specific points of the body. The main aim of the procedure is to regulate the body functioning through acupuncture needling. Problems such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism that affect fertility can be treated with the help of acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture therapies have been using from very ancient times itself to treat certain causes of infertility. Acupuncture with some herbal medicine can improve some of the factors that cause infertility. It is not a good choice for conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease and tubal adhesions. Still, it can be used to improve the ovarian and follicular function in the patient.

Acupuncture can also enhance the blood flow to the endometrium. Acupuncture is a different medical intervention which is a process-oriented method. It should be started before three-four months of their infertility treatment. This gap will give a therapeutic effect for the treatment. According to certain studies, it is good to have acupuncture therapy before and after the embryo transfer procedure. However, to conceive acupuncture alone may not be enough. Acupuncture treatment should stop around the twelfth week of pregnancy. It is suggested to prevent miscarriages.

The acupuncture points are different in pregnant or in pregnancy suspected patients. Needles should not be placed in the abdomino-pelvic area after embryo transfer or insemination. The 6 points where the acupuncturist is not supposed to needle on pregnant and pregnancy suspected patients include:

  • Stomach 12

  • Large intestine 4

  • Gallbladder 21

  • Bladder 60

  • Spleen 6

  • Bladder 67 and

  • Any points on the lower abdomen.

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) with anovulatory cycles

  • Elevated Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

  • Unexplained infertility

  • Hyperprolactinemia
