What is tracheitis?

An inflammation of the trachea or the windpipe is called tracheitis. Most inflammations are caused due to bacterial infection. It can even be caused due to other issues that are non-infectious. If the inflammation is caused due to other factors, it may even affect the other structures of the respiratory tract. If the inflammation is caused due to bacteria, it is called bacterial tracheitis.

What causes tracheitis?

Tracheitis can be caused due to a number of bacterial species. Some common types of bacteria that trigger tracheitis are:

  • S. pyogenes

  • S.pneumoniae

  • Staphylococcus aureus

  • Haemophilus influenzae

  • Klebsiella

What are the signs and symptoms of tracheitis?

Tracheitis may have the similar symptoms like laryngitis and bronchitis. Some of the common symptoms may include:

  • Fever

  • Sore throat

  • Breastbone pain or retrosternal pain/discomfort

  • Dry, painful cough

  • Cyanosis

  • Painful swallowing

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Flaring of nostrils

  • Hoarse voice

  • Stridor

How tracheitis is treated?

The treatment option will be based on the diagnosis reports and symptoms of the patient. To make breathing easier, the doctor may suggest special care to manage the airway. Supplemental oxygen, a ventilator or an endotracheal tube may be required according to the case. To keep the trachea open, the doctor may suggest an endotracheal tube. It will help to make the breathing easier. Antibiotics may be suggested if the doctor identifies any bacteria. For a complete recovery, it important to get treatment done as soon as possible.
