What is severe acute respiratory syndrome?

A life-threatening form of pneumonia which is highly contagious and serious is called ‘severe acute respiratory syndrome. SARS coronavirus is the main cause for this disease.

How the disease is spread?

Contacting saliva of the patient or droplets can spread SARS disease. A casual exposure to the patient may not cause the disease to spread. Infection can develop through:

  • Sharing food with the infected person

  • Close contact with the infected person

  • Kissing or hugging a SARS patient

  • Sneeze

  • Unwashed hands

What are the symptoms of SARS?

The disease will show flu-like symptoms. Some of them are:

  • A high-temperature

  • Headaches

  • Chills

  • Diarrhoea

  • Muscle pain

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

These symptoms will be seen during 2-10 days after infection. After that, there can be additional symptoms like:

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Lack of oxygen in the blood

  • A dry cough

What are the treatment options for SARS?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for SARS. Researches are still going on to find a vaccine for the disease. Supportive treatments are given to relieve the symptoms to a certain extent. It may include:

  • Using a ventilator to assist breathing

  • Antibiotics to treat bacteria causing pneumonia

  • High doses of steroids to reduce the swelling in the lungs

  • Antiviral medications

Is SARS preventable?

It is important to keep a distance from the infected person. Intimate contact will lead spreading the infection. Keeping hygienic habits will also help to avoid SARS. Wearing masks, gloves and goggles may also help in some situations.
