What is pharyngitis?

The area of the back of the throat is known as the pharynx. An inflammation of the pharynx is called ‘pharyngitis’. A pharyngitis may cause a sore throat, scratching in the throat as well as difficulty in swallowing. Pharyngitis is one of the common diseases seen in most people.

What causes pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis can be caused due to a virus infection, a bacterial infection or due to other issues such as:

  • Allergies

  • Exposure to cold and flu

  • Frequent sinus infection

  • Exposure to second-hand smoke

What are the symptoms of pharyngitis?

Apart from the common symptoms of pharyngitis, the symptoms may vary according to the underlying conditions. Some of the common symptoms of pharyngitis include:

  • Sore, scratchy and dry throat

  • Sneezingyngitis/

  • Headache

  • Runny nose

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Body aches

  • Cough

  • Fatigue

How is pharyngitis diagnosed?

The doctor will first have a physical examination. During the physical examination, he/she will check for the symptoms. If the doctor suspects the patient to have a strep throat, he/she may suggest for a throat culture. For this, a sample of the throat secretion is taken using a swab. If the doctor suspects for any other conditions as the cause for a pharyngitis infection, he/she may order blood tests.

What are the treatments for pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is a mild infection which can be tackled with simple home care and medications. A course of antibiotic medication will be enough to cure pharyngitis. Home care will be enough to relieve pharyngitis caused due to virus. Some of the home care treatments include:

  • Over-the-counter medications

  • Gargling using warm salt water

  • Rest

  • Using a humidifier

  • Drinking plenty of water

  • Using throat lozenges
