What is laryngotracheitis?

An inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the larynx is called ‘laryngotracheitis’. This condition causes significant respiratory obstruction.

What are the causes of laryngotracheitis?

There can be many factors which may cause laryngotracheitis. Some of the common causes are:

  • Bacterial or fungal infection

  • Viral infection

  • Allergies

  • Smoking

  • Overuse of alcohol

  • Infection of the larynx

  • Excessive coughing

  • Chronic upper respiratory tract disorders like bronchitis, nasal polyps, sinusitis

What are the symptoms of laryngotracheitis?

  • An increasing deep or barking cough after an upper respiratory tract infection

  • Scratchy throat

  • Crowing sound while inhaling

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Difficulty breathing
