What is knee replacement?

A knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty or knee resurfacing is the surgical procedure where the surface of the bones in the knee joint is replaced. Arthritis or injuries may cause severe damage to the knee. Knee damage makes it difficult to carry out vert simple physical activities. Pain can be there which may get severe each day. The doctor may try non-surgical treatment options to cure the damage. When they fail, the best next option is knee replacement. The patient will be under anesthesia for the entire procedure. It can be either general anesthesia, regional, spinal, epidural or nerve block anesthesia. The doctor and anesthesia will choose the best one for the patient. The whole procedure of total knee replacement will take around 1 to 2 hours of time. After giving the anesthesia, the doctor will move to the next step of removing the damaged cartilage and bone. After removing them, the doctor will then place the new implants (metal or plastic). The implant will restore the alignment and normal functioning of the knee.

What are the complications and risks of the surgery?

The knee replacement surgery complications and risks are very less. However, any surgery possesses certain risks and complications. A few of them are:

  • Infection

  • Blood clot

  • Nerve damage

What about the recovery?

The knee replacement surgery recovery may take a few weeks or months of time. The patient will need to stay in the hospital for several days after the surgery. During the hospital stay, the doctor will suggest the following to ease the post-surgery pain and discomforts:

  • Physical therapy

  • Blood clot prevention

  • Pain management

  • Preventing pneumonia

After the hospital discharge, the patient will need to follow the surgeon’s instruction for follow-up care. During the recovery period at home, the patient will need to take care of the following:

  • Caring the wound

  • Diet

  • Activity

The doctor may suggest some simple knee replacement surgery exercise, which can be done at home. The exercise is usually suggested for the first few weeks after the surgery.
