Arthroscopic shoulder stabilization surgery

What is arthroscopic shoulder stabilization surgery?

It is an arthroscopic surgical procedure to restore the stability of a dislocated shoulder. A shoulder joint becomes unstable or dislocated, when it slips out of the joint. Any injury or fracture to the structures of the shoulder joint is the main cause for shoulder instability. A shoulder dislocation or shoulder instability causes pain and limited motion of the joint. If a person experiences recurrent dislocation, he/she iwill be at risk for significant instability. A shoulder dislocation can cause additional damage to the ligaments and the joint surfaces. It may result in shoulder arthritis. To restore the stability of the shoulder joint, surgery may be necessary.

How is the surgery performed?

The surgery is carried out to restore the mobility of the shoulder joint. During the procedure, the surgeon will first make an incision over the surgical area. Through the incision, the surgeon will insert the arthroscope which will give a clear view of the inner structures of the joint. The doctor will use surgical instruments to reattach the loose or torn ligaments. A special implant, “suture anchors”, is used for this. Once, everything is in place, the incision will be closed with sutures.

How about recovery and rehabilitation after the stabilization surgery?

After the surgery, the surgeon will suggest the patient to keep the arm immobile for a few days or weeks. The patient will require plenty of rest and lifting heavy objects are strictly prohibited during this period. After a few days, the surgeon will suggest a pendulum type exercise. To control pain and swelling, using ice pack will be helpful. The doctor will suggest other rehabilitation plans, if required.

What are the advantages of arthroscopic shoulder stabilization?

Some of the common benefits of an arthroscopic surgery include the following:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring
  • Less blood loss
  • Limited time for hospital stay
  • Less stiffness
