A healthy diet and exercise are the important factors for attaining a toned and well-shaped body image. To enhance the overall body image, a proportionate looking thigh is necessary. However, at times, proper fitness and weight loss methods fail to provide a young and firm appearance to the thighs.

The modern thigh lift surgery involves creating thighs, which are proportionate to the buttocks, legs, and abdomen in appearance. Ideally, an hour-glass silhouette, which indents towards the waist with a firm outward curve to the outer thighs, should be formed with the help of the trunk and outer thighs. The excess fat and skin in the thigh and knee regions can be easily removed through a thigh lift (thighplasty). As a result, a more defined, slim, tight, and great looking thigh is obtained. The underlying supportive tissue is also re-positioned in this procedure. A thigh lift aims to improve the body image along with self-confidence enhancement, by undergoing some physical changes.

The best candidates for body contouring procedure are those men and women who are seen to have flabby, saggy and/or dimpled loose tissue and skin on their thighs. Thigh lift surgery is also recommended for those people who have lost a massive amount of weight from Bariatric surgery. Several factors contribute to poor tissue elasticity, which thereby results in saggy or irregular contours of the thigh and lower body. The factors include sun damage, age, pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuations. Leg lift surgery is preferred for those people who have a stable weight or excess soft tissue along the inner or medial thigh or outer thigh region, and who are non-smokers.

In some individuals, the dimpled and irregular appearance of skin, commonly thigh lift surgerycalled as cellulite, can be improved with a leg lift surgery. The fat which necessarily contributes to a disproportionate body shape, can be corrected by combining thigh lift with liposuction. Thigh lift is considered to be a perfect method for restoring shape, tone of the upper leg or thigh, and overall skin appearance. A thigh lift is a surgical procedure. Depending upon the amount and location of the excess skin to be removed along with personal as well as plastic surgeon’s preference, the length and pattern of the incision are determined. Typically, the inner or medial thighs, the outer thighs or both are treated with this procedure. In inner thigh lift, the incision is made in the groin region, which extends downward on the inner thigh portion to the knee. However, in outer thigh and medial thigh region, an additional incision in a bikini pattern is needed, which extends from the groin to the hip to the buttock crease. With advanced technologies, it becomes easy to hide the incisions by most types of clothing and swimsuits.

The lax tissues seen in the inner side of the upper thighs can be corrected with inner or medial thigh lift procedure. Body lift or abdominoplasty is required to address the supporting tissues of the lower trunk areas. Massive weight loss often results in the formation of extra fold of skin, which can be removed through medial thigh lift. If not removed, with growing age, this extra skin does not shrink and becomes lax and fuzzy. For people who desires to have a thinner and firmer inner thighs, the popular cosmetic surgery called inner thigh lift, or an inner thighplasty is recommended. Sometimes, a thigh lift is performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures such as arm lift.

Types of Thigh Lift

Depending upon the incision pattern, there exist different types of thigh lift procedures:

  • Inner (medial) thigh lift: Groin folds chosen as the incision site. It is the most popular and commonly used type of thigh lift. People who have a moderate amount of skin and fat in this region, are the best candidates for this surgery.

  • Vertical thighplasty: A vertical incision is made which extends from the groin crease to the inner knee. Post-surgery may show some visible scars. Vertical thighplasty is preferred for those individuals who have significant fat and loose skin.

  • Outer thigh lift: An incision is made which extends from the groin around the hip. Spiral thighplasty, a new procedure, aims to treat the front, back, inner and outer thigh. People who suffered from massive weight loss can undergo this plastic surgery procedure.

  • Combination Thigh LIft Surgery: Depending upon the fat quantity, quality of skin, and the areas to be treated, it may be necessary to use a combination thigh lift.

Although, the overall results of the surgery are long-lasting, provided a stable weight and general fitness is maintained, there may occur some visible scars. With aging, some of the body firmness may get lost. Among other body contouring surgeries, medial thigh is perhaps the most trickiest. Some of the possible complications include swelling, soreness, and bruising. Prior to surgery, intake of certain prescribed supplements, minimizes the risk of bruising and swelling. After surgery, for the first 48 to 72 hours, some discomfort and tightness are experienced. It may take about three to five weeks for the swelling in the upper thighs and lower body to subside. Rarely, bleeding, infection, fluid build-up, and open wounds can occur.

Other complications can be poor wound healing, blood clots, anesthesia risks, fluid accumulation, skin loss, numbness or other skin sensations, skin discoloration, persistent pain, injury or death of fatty tissue seen deep in the skin and unsatisfactory results.

The plastic surgeons performing the surgery should have a certification from the Board of Plastic Surgery. This is required to ensure the extensive training received by the doctor. To get a better idea of what you can expect, it is advised to view before-and-after photos of thigh lift patients.
