Eyebrow Restoration

With respect to facial symmetry and presentation of self to others, a significant contribution is given by eyebrows and eyelashes. Eyebrows frame the eyes. They are regarded to be one among the first facial structures which are noticed as a society. A person who lacks eyebrows or eyelashes may experience embarrassment about one’s own appearance.

Eyebrows and eyelashes can be lost in a variety of ways: Physical agony resulted from chemical, thermal or electrical burns, congenital inability to grow, local or systemic disease with hair loss, eyebrow reshaping that cause permanent eyebrow loss, radiation therapy, burns, chemotherapy or surgical tumor removal. The degree of eyebrow loss may vary from partial to complete; in the selection of restoration procedure the degree of loss is highly considerable. Some patients with no eyebrow/eyelash loss also seek enhancement of eyebrow/eyelash for cosmetic reasons. Originally, eyebrow restoration was designed to treat burn victims. It also included patients of terminal illness to prevent growing of hair in the eyebrow region. Since then, as per recommended by woman wishing for perfect eyebrows, eyebrow restoration surgeries have evolved into a cosmetic procedure.

Hair transplant of the eyebrow aims to recreate the eyebrow. A combined work of patient and physician is essential in outlining the eyebrow area. This helps to yield the natural symmetry of the patient’s face. The number of transplant session required depends upon the size of the area to be transplanted.

Hair transplant procedures done on the scalp are nearly similar to eyebrow restoration. The hair transplanted is permanent. The unique properties of the eyebrows makes eyebrow transplant differ from hair transplant in a number of ways. Based on the facial type, facial features, and the person’s desire, eyebrow restoration is individually designed. An experienced physician includes factors such as appropriate hair thickness, space between brows, the arch shape, and brow length. Eyebrow and/or eyelash restoration procedure is referred to as a minimally invasive micro surgical procedure.

All or a part of the eyebrow can be restored by following procedures:

  • Single hairs or micrografts extracted from the donor area are transplanted to the eyebrow. A strip of hair from another site to the eyebrow is brought by a reconstructive flap or graft procedure.

  • Transplants: From the donor site, a strip of hair bearing skin and subcutaneous tissue can be removed and grafted into the surgically prepared eyebrow site.

  • Scalp to eyebrow pedicle flaps: A strip of hair bearing skin and subcutaneous tissue lifted from the temple area lying in front of the ear, with its blood supply connected. Pedicle flap is the name given to this type of donor graft connected to a blood supply. However, this procedure is seldom used.

  • Rogaine forms an important stimulant of eyebrow regrowth. Rogaine triggers the activation of dormant hair follicles.

  • In Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), grafts are taken individually from the back and sides of the patient’s head. The hair transplant technique involving direct removal of follicular units from the donor area is referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). For creating a natural looking hair line and to add density to thinning areas, the grafts are transplanted into the areas where more hair is desired by the patient. The key factor which differentiates follicular unit extraction from the traditional FUT hair replacement procedures is the direct extraction of follicle units from the scalp and microscopic dissection of follicles from an already removed strip. Using a tiny instrument which measures about one millimeter in diameter, individual follicular units are excised one at a time. During Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE hair transplant procedure, a small circular incision is created around the follicular unit. Later, the graft is taken directly from the scalp. After follicle unit extraction, the small opening is left behind, which heals in a few days. This follicular unit hair transplantation DOES NOT involve: invasive scar-leaving strip surgery, synthetic fiber implants, flaps and scalp reductions, and grafts.

For transplantation purpose, the hair from donor sites which furnish finer instead of coarser hair are chosen; finer hair matches better with eyebrow hair. The transplantation of donor hair is done as micrografts of one or two hairs. An incision is prepared on which each graft is placed. Meticulous adherence is permitted to the eyebrow by the use of single hairs or micrografts.

Eyelash hair restoration: The eyelash hair can be restored only by transplantation procedure. For transplantation, finer hair rather than coarser from the donor site should be used.

A most common and troublesome postoperative complication is itching. There exist risk of dislodging hair grafts and initiating infection from the scratcheds formed by itching. In some patients, possible pain and swelling is reported. After surgery, bruising is commonly noticed, which resolves in a week or more. Eyebrow hair transplantation is regarded as a safe and cosmetically elegant procedure. However, prior to this type of hair restoration, a number of important things should be remembered. Periodical trimming is needed for hair transplants from the scalp. This results in a not much delicate cut end. During healing, the wounds formed at the incision site starts to contract. This slightly changes their flat orientation and provides a slightly elevated eyebrow hair.

Post Operative Care: In any crust in present, an antibiotic ointment can be used in the brow to soften it.

Eyebrow Implants

The newest genre in the segment of cosmetic surgery are the eyebrow implants.Unlike most cosmetic surgery branches, only necessary situations uses eyebrow implants. The entire process is both pretty money consuming and time consuming. Great and professionalized expertise are involved in the procedure. Eyebrow implant is offered in many clinics at a very profitable price. Right sized eyebrows are obtained by eyebrow implants. This is referred to as permanent grafting or false lashes.

For grooming the eyebrows, the commonly used technique is waxing. Heated wax is usually applied to the undesired eyebrow hairs. The hot wax used in the waxing process often causes burns or irritations at the eyebrows. Eyes, being, the sensitive part of the human body requires more care during eyebrow waxing. Due to the skin’s sensitivity, burns are more common in this area.
