Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which is known as Grahani in Ayurveda, occurs due to one or more dosha imbalance and it weakens the duodenum. According to Ayurveda, duodenum is the aspect that helps in digestion and also holds the food until it is properly digested and then allows it to be eliminated through colon. Inefficiency of duodenum leads to either constipation or diarrhea for a longer period. ¬†So an alternating loose bowl and constipation are the main symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Improper digestion and heaviness in body
- Joint pain
- Vomiting tendencies
- Pain in abdomen
- Burning in cardiac region and throat
- Patient may pass stool as liquid, undigested food with mucus
- Frequent motions, which are sometimes, dry and sometime water consistency
Treatment in Ayurveda
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is mainly approached through alteration in diet. Patients are suggested to avoid foods likely to stimulate and episode and to increase fiber, found in the whole-grain products, cereals and beans. Physician may recommend patient to use the counter fiber supplements. Patients who are using fiber needs to make sure that they are consuming the right amount as high-fiber diets can cause additional gas and bloating.
It is advisable to eat smaller means more frequently putting less stress on the digestive tract. Doctors may also prescribe a variety of meditations. Some of these may target water retention in the colon, other may focus on the colon motility.
Ayurveda can help Irritable Bowel by treating the patient holistically by making necessary change in the diet to reduce negative impact of foods in the digestive system, reducing mental stress impact on the digestive system, and creating a harmony of mind, body and spirit.
Foods to be Avoided
Avoid eating wheat, maize, barley, pigeon pea, spiked dolichos, black gram, soya bean, kidney bean, potato, sweet potato, onion, coconut, groundnut, chili, oily food, chicken, red meat, prawns, crabs, leafy vegetables like sorrel, drum stick etc.
Foods to be Included
Coriander leaves, lentil, green grams soup, black pepper, dried ginger, wood apple, pomegranate, nutmeg, buttermilk and hot water.
